ProVention at a glance |
The ProVention Consortium is a global coalition of international organisations, governments, the private sector, civil society organisations and academic institutions dedicated to increasing the safety of vulnerable communities and to reducing the impacts of disasters in developing countries. It provides a forum for multi-stakeholder dialogue on disaster risk reduction and a framework for collective action.
ProVention aims to advance disaster risk management in developing countries by forging partnerships and linkages; advocating among leaders and decision makers for increased policy attention and commitment to reducing natural hazard risks; developing innovative approaches to the practical applications of disaster risk management; and sharing knowledge and resources for organisations, practitioners and communities active in disaster reduction.
A set of five thematic priorities have been identified by ProVention as key areas of strategic focus: Mainstreaming Risk Reduction, Risk Analysis & Application, Reducing Risks in Recovery, Risk Transfer & Private Sector Investment, Expanding Risk Research & Learning.
The added value ProVention provides to the international disaster reduction system is multi-facetted. The Consortium functions as a multi-stakeholder network across the different constituencies, providing the space for informal dialogue and agenda setting on the one hand and aiming at problem-solving and an output-oriented approach on the other hand. It is the combination of the ProVention objectives with its working culture characteristics, and also with a focus on particular thematic priorities that ultimately defines ProVention's approach to bringing the risk reduction agenda forward.
