Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network (ACCCRN) |
Description
The Rockefeller Foundation has initiated the Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network (ACCCRN) in order to catalyse attention, funding, and action on building climate change resilience for poor and vulnerable people by creating robust climate resilience strategies through active engagement and analysis at city level. ACCCRN currently includes country-level partners and partner organizations working together with 10 Asian cities across Indonesia, India, Thailand and Vietnam.
The ACCCRN program has the following objectives:
- Test and demonstrate a range of actions to build climate change resilience in cities
- Build a replicable base of lessons learned, successes and failures
- Assist cities in the development and implementation of a climate change resilience building process
- Help cities continue activities that build climate change resilience
ProVention has led a component of the ACCCRN program that focuses on identifying and connecting with potential funding sources at country, regional and global levels; leveraging opportunities for donor funding of ACCCRN projects; and building linkages between ACCCRN, practitioners and donors on resilience priorities to support the objectives of the initiative.
Outputs & events
The ACCCRN program has commenced in each of the target cities with a process of Shared Learning Dialogues to guide a set of city stakeholders through risk analysis and the consideration of potential adaptation strategies and options. For more detailed information about what has been accomplished in this phase within the ACCCRN, please download the publication ACCCRN – Responding to the Urban Climate Challenge.
Led by ProVention and ICLEI, efforts have also been made to raise attention to the climate change adaptation needs of cities and local organisations in the context of the UNFCCC process. During the pre-COP-15 UNFCCC meeting in Bangkok, Thailand in September 2009, a preliminary Cities and Resilience Dialogue was held with cities from Indonesia, India, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam together with their national climate negotiators and international and regional organisations supporting urban resilience programs. The presentations from that conference as well as a Cities and Resilience – Climate Policy Brief (with versions in English, Gujarati, Hindi and Vietnamese) are available on the conference summary page on the Rockefeller Foundation website.
The ACCCRN program was also presented at the COP-15 meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark in December 2009 through a session at the ICLEI Local Government Climate Lounge and a session at the Development and Climate Days.
Because of the phasing out of ProVention activities more generally, ProVention was forced end its participation in the ACCCRN program in January 2010, although the overall program is slated to run through 2012.
